Cells at Work makes my heart warm

Weird how the right people can make a worth while anime out of the strangest and mundane topics.

Meet the anime “Cells at Work” and it’s exactly what it’s name is.

Dive into the human body to meet the multitude of cells that make up our complex blood, immune, and digestive system. Learn about the different cells and their jobs in these systems and what they do if a bacteria att– Ok… Yeah, I know it kind of sounds like something that your high school biology teacher would put on if they didn’t want to teach but here me out.

The thing that attracted me to this anime was the fact that they stayed true to how the body works. Instead of creating different characters designs (or however “different” background characters can be) they stayed true to how cells actually are and created base character designs according to what they are. There’s room for creativity within the individuals but, once you get to know the cells a bit better, it’s kind of fun to see them in the background and be like ” YO! That’s a White Blood Cell!”. The anime does stop and talk about what the cells/bacteria do, so if you’re not a fan of explaining, not quite the best anime for you.

Idk, I’m a nerd and love collecting random bits of knowledge and this is just a way to get more information into me. AND because it’s currently only offered with subtitles, me having to read it makes the knowledge sink in even deeper into my long term memory. :3

Boo

I just recently watched Hocus Pocus

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

I have always heard about the movie, how it is a “much watch” around the Halloween season but I never got around to watching it.

It was as I expected it to be:

A 90’s comedy film. Poor CGI and corny jokes

I’m not mad at it, though what I did do throughout almost the entire film was say “They put that in a Children’s film?!?”

I had TOTALLY forgotten that PG and G meant something different back then then it does now (in my opinion). I was just surprised when they showed the witches in actual nooses, taked about virginity, described ingrediants, and had that one witch who wanted to “play” with children, to name a few thing that made me think “Huh….”

The Crow strikes again

I just recently watched The Crow.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

This movie had been on my watch list for a long time. I don’t really remember why I first santed to watch it but it was probably because of how people keep switching Heath Ledger’s death (cardic arrest via drugs) and Brandon Lee’s death (accident on set), probably because the two characters have pretty similer looks.

The Crow is about a young man who was killed when a bunch of thugs raided his house and defiled his bride-to-be. A few years later, a crow gives him the power to take revenge on the people who wronged him and his lover.

I guess you would call him a “hero”, or at the very least an antihero. He does do an awful lot of killing during this movie. It was a decent movie to watch, pretty basic in it’s plot, you could check out for a few minutes and still get a basic idea of what was happening. It is set on Halloween so if you’re looking for a Halloween movie, not a bad choice.

It is rated R for a reason:

Gore, drug usage, violence, swears, nudity, graphic content

Gaming isn’t just for Nerds

“You can’t say you enjoy that videogame! You’ve never played it!”

WELL EXCUUUUUUUUUSE ME PRINCESS!

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been given a weird look or vehemently told an opinion over the fact that I like certain videogames but haven’t actually played them.

The unique thing about videogames is that they are like playable movies. Games like Legend of Zelda, Bendy and the Ink Machine, and Until Dawn have great storylines what are broken up with action and puzzles. Because of the way thay are created, these games can be enjoyed by even if you just watch an automated playthrough. And because we live in the amazing era of The Future, YouTube is full of Let’s Plays of any videogame you want to watch and those who upload the videos also give an extra layer of experience and fun depending on who you watch.

Don’t get me wrong, if I could play the game, I would. My issue is that I lack the necessary finger movement to play these games properly. And before you try to say, “You just need practice!” I have! I spent hours playing Ocarina of Time only to slowly develop a hatred for the game and my lack of gaming skills. I couldn’t look at the game for the longest amount of time even though it is my all time favorite plot of a videogame. I am not willing to do something just because someone told me I wasn’t having the full experience. I may not be able to comment about how the game feels when you play it but I can comment about everything else. It’s like watching a modern movie in black and white. Sure, you may not be able to comment about the color choices but you still experience all the good parts.

So, am I going to support these videogames by buying merch and posting about them on social media even though I haven’t rescued Zelda, hid from Bendy, or accidentally killed Ashley?

You better believe I am.

Rant Over.

Over the Wall we go

I just watched “Over the Garden Wall”

.

.

.

.

.

.

I had actually known about this series for a long time, a girl friend of mine had sat me down to watch the first two episodes with her maybe a year back. We did plan to watch the rest together but Korean dramas soon took over and we forgot about it. It wasn’t until a recently when my sister threw a party just for the explicit reason of watching the series because, for her, this is her must watch Halloween “movie”.

The series itself is about two brothers, Wart (the worrying philosopher) and Greg (happy-go-lucky singer), who want to find their way back home. Along the way, they meet interesting creatures and people and thus insues a mini conflict and resolve for each episodes. It kind of reminds me of Gravity Falls, but with a grittier character design.

It is a series that makes you say “Wait… What…?” multiple times. Some jokes you see coming from a mile away while others Jack-in-the-box you in the face. There are random moments that happen during one episode the come back later in a different episode to make sense.

The part I really enjoyed was when my sister took the opportunity when we were done watching to look up a YouTube video on 15 facts about Over the Garden Wall. I had no idea that famous actors like Tom Curry and Elijah Wood voiced characters in it. It also was apparently in production since 2004, which is incredible dedication on such a short miniseries.

I will probably have to rewatch it again at some point, it’s one of those series that things make a bit more sense once you see the end.

Pause the Movie!

What ever happened to the intermission in movies?

There are intermissions for operas, orchestral performances, musicals, and stage productions, they’re often used to change the stage dramatically for the second half. I guess a movie doesn’t have that limitation but consider this:

If you decided to watch older movies like Ben Hur or Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, you will often in the middle of the movie get a title card announcing an Intermission so it used to be a thing, why did they remove it?

The first thing I thought of was running time. Ben Hur is a whopping 3 hours and 44 minutes, it would honestly be insane to ask someone to sit that length of time, most operas are that length. Movies now aren’t as long… Right? Well, while looking up the length time of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I got curious and looked up the running time of Avengers Infinity Wars. Infinity Wars has a run time of 2 hours 40 minutes while Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is 2 hours 25 minutes including the short intermission. Even musicals have that have the same run time as movies have intermissions so length isn’t the issue.

Once I went down that rabbit hole things started confusing me about this no intermission thing. Why shouldn’t movie theaters include them? I often find myself overstimulated by the big screen and have to take a breather to process everything. Wouldn’t that be a perfect time to say “let’s all go to the lobby and get something to eat?” There is literally a 7up commercial that states just that! I’m not a business woman by a long shot but wouldn’t that increase food and drink sales?

The one major thing that I saw while diving down the Wikipedia for intermissions that made movie theaters start doing away with them was the added time.

More run time = less movie options = less money in ticket sales.

The decision is ultimately do you make more money from the tickets or the food? I, personally, would enjoy movies more if I had that intermission but that’s just me.

Rules of the Stage

Tis the season to be jolly!!!

And also apparently tis the season for families to figure out what the Heck their going to do to entertain their in-laws who came 3 weeks early for Christmas. I have recently discovered that there are a quite a few families who go out to different stage productions like opera, musicals, plays, and ballets.

As someone who likes to go to these throughout the year and performs herself, I would like to inform the masses about the proper etiquette to use, not that I think that everyone is ignorant and HAS to be educated on the subject but sometimes it’s nice to be a good audience and give what the performers are sometimes expecting. I remember my first jazz concert and being very confused when was the appropriate time to clap and I know that I can’t be alone on this.

So my Christmas gift to you guys a five part series of Mabel Rants dedicated to helping you become the best audience member you can be during this crazy season and maybe give a little courage to those who are afraid to try out some stage productions because of the unknown.

Let’s do a Dance

The first thing that jumps to into my mind quite literally during the holiday season is Ballet.

It is often a Thanksgiving tradition for most families to go see the soaring grace of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker”. With it’s whimsical story and often colorful backdrops, “The Nutcracker” is the perfect choice for family fun.

Unlike the other artforms that I will be talking about later in this series, ballet is probably the most dangerous classical art with it’s lifts, jumps, and going on pointe so the etiquette is a bit different and more for the protection of the performers then just for tradition sake.

While in the audience:

Like any other performance or important event that requires silence, any noise making devices should be turned off at all times during the performance. The performers don’t mind if people converse amongst each other just do be aware of the people around you.

If, for any reason, you must leave the performance early to do something, please be aware that you typically will not be allowed back in until the intermission which is 15-20 minutes long. This is generally done for the safety of the dancers, since doors can let in unwanted light from the hall or create a sound that could be distracting.

When to Clap:

Clap when a scene ends, when the show ends, and when a performer takes a bow. Should you clap for each performer? You should! They have spent hours making sure that this performance is perfect and even some dance more then two parts which means costume changes and that is not easy. If you couldn’t possibly clap for the length of the curtain call, save your claps for the important role characters (e.g. Clara, The Nutcracker, Suger Plum Fairy, etc…)

It takes years of practice, discipline, and dedication for Ballerinas and Ballerinos to do the leaps, turns, and lifts that we, the audience, get to enjoy. When a dancer performs a lift or does multiple turns in a row, begin to clap to show the appreciation to their dedication.

Ballet is a unique art experience that combines the beauty of sound with the power of the human body. It is something that everyone should try to watch at least once. Even I, who cannot for the life of me understand why standing on your tip toes is considered “graceful”, am always left floored by these performances.

-Mabel

P.S.

I am certainly not the authority on this and if a dancer would like to comment more on this I would appreciate it!

Role for Damage

When the Cubs won the World Series in 2016 one of my best friends held my hand so tight she almost broke it. I saw an grown man sit down on the ground and cry. And I just wanted to go to bed.

Right now, as I am writing this it is almost 1 am in the morning, a similar time to when the Cubs won, and I’ve been watching 6 people play Dungeons and Dragons on Twitch for the past four hours. And I’m going to be honest with you here, I’m crying because it feels like my team won the World Series. I have never been someone who was ever really into watching or playing sports, but right now, I feel like I just ran a marathon. I have been hyperventilating and yelling at my laptop while I watched 6 people I do not know describe themselves fighting and casting spells and rolling dice to see if they were successful. How did I get here?

Two weeks ago, I got onto YouTube and was looking to waste a little time before I would start my homework, and the livestream for Critical Role had begun about 40 minutes earlier. Critical Role started off as a part of Geek and Sundry, and their dnd campaign videos can be watched on the Geek and Sundry YouTube channel. It’s where a bunch of nerdy voice actors sit around and play Dungeons and Dragons. It has consumed my life.

I’ve watched parts of Critical Role before, but they are in the middle of a campaign right now, so I was not looking to commit to anything. I just wanted to see if the episode was interesting. It was. Two Thursdays ago I became enthralled by the characters and the story of Critical Role’s second campaign. Over the past two weeks I have watched 24 episodes trying to catch up (episode 43 aired tonight) because I cannot get enough of the Might Nein. I have watched with bated breath as I listened to backstories, watched fights, and attended festivals with Fjord, Beau, Caleb, Nott, Jester, Mollymauk, Yasha, and later Caduceus.

All my family, friends, and casual acquaintances have heard me talk about how I have been watching people on YouTube play Dungeons and Dragons for the past two weeks, and the only people who understand are my friends who play dnd. For me, I love Dungeons and Dragons for the same reason I love watching boomwhacker music videos: cooperation and teamwork. All the players work together to create the story of the campaign. They work together to help each other meet their group goals. It is fascinating to watch because it is also in the interest of their characters to keep some things secret. They walk a beautiful tight rope as they balance the interests of the group and their own self preservation.

I also love the epic story. Not an epic in the conventional sense, but an epic like the Odyssey. A long tale with many different stories woven together to create a whole. All the threads woven together to create a masterpiece. I love seeing characters and plots develop over long periods of time. I love watching relationships build up and sometimes seeing them get torn down. Dungeons and Dragons is all about the story, and the most important rule I’ve learned while watching Critical Role is everything is acceptable if it makes sense narratively.

I’m still reeling from everything that happened in tonight’s episode, but I am so glad to that Critical Role exists for me to help me avoid my homework. The only thing I have left to say is “Is it Thursday yet?”

Netflix: The Next Frontier

Who remembers Paramount Pictures? You should. They are the studio that released “A Quiet Place”. They haven’t gone out of business yet. They are in the news again why? They made a deal with Netflix.

What deal did Netflix and Paramount make?

The duo has signed on to let Netflix create shows and movies using such properties as Transformers, Star Trek, Cloverfield and others. It’s no surprise Paramount would do this taking into consideration they were the ones behind 13 Reasons Why, Maniac, and the new live action Last Airbender Series (check out Incensum’s article on that https://wethegeek.water.blog/2018/10/01/avatars-return/).

This is a huge deal. Why? Simply put Paramount is the sixth biggest studio in the US. Everyone is trying to get into the streaming game. With the looming release of Disney+ (RytheGeek’s article on that https://wethegeek.water.blog/2018/10/20/streaming-wars/) Paramount is trying not to be left behind.

I want to give credit to Paramount for using Netflix. I’m very upset that DC and Disney have decided to create their own platforms instead of using current services.

Even if the new shows that Netflix and Paramount have are not amazing at least they are trying. For that I am grateful.

Let’s all settle in as the streaming wars kick off.

I’ll see you geeks and nerds later!
