Smosh, GameTheory, and Defy

Defy Media and the Fallout

It’s been a while (November) since I’ve given an update on Smosh, Defy, and the collapse of YouTube. We have a lot of news both great and terrible.

Let’s start with the bad news first. Defy Media really has collapsed. We reported it when Smosh fell into disarray and subsequently several other YouTubers have come out to say they were part of, and hurt by, Defy Media. Matthew Patrick of GameTheory has been the loudest in his complaints of Defy. You can check out his first video here. https://youtu.be/ACNhHTqIVqk

Through the confessions of the other former Defy YouTubers we have learned a lot. First Defy was a middle man. The company was designed to help small YouTubers advertise and build their brand. For a small fee off the top Defy would help with these things. They would take the money from YouTube, take their cut of the ad revenue, then pass it on to the YouTubers. Defy would use the money coming in, the total, not their cut, and show investors how much they were making. But the money wasn’t theirs. Most of it belonged to the YouTubers. In the end when Defy collapsed they had stollen $1.7 million from the YouTubers they represented. They kept many of these Internet personalities paychecks and said too bad. Matpat does a much better job explaining so go watch his video.

Simplified down Defy stole $1.7 million from people like GameTheory and Smosh.

Besides stealing, Defy also closed on of the most well known YouTube channels, Smosh. We reported on in back in November and you can read the article here https://wethegeek.water.blog/2018/11/12/the-fall-of-smosh/

Thankfully Smosh has some good news. After several months in limbo Smosh has a new home, Rhett and Link. Yes the duo who stars and runs Good Mythical Morning has taken Smosh under their wings and given them a home. We aren’t sure what changes, if any, will happen to Smosh but this is definitely great news.

Stay tuned as the Defy scandal unfolds.

Umbrella Academy a refreshing superhero team

Umbrella Academy

Stand aside X-men, a new team of super humans is on the scene. The Umbrella Academy is here and definitely making a name for themselves.

I just finished a 24 hour binge sesh of Umbrella Academy on Netflix. I loved it! I’m going to come out and say it. I thought it was one of the best shows I’ve watched in several years. Not to mention it’s everything I’ve always wanted in an X-men series but better.

As someone who never read the comics I went into this blind and I was happily rewarded. The plot follows seven siblings who have extraordinary powers. Well okay six super powered siblings and one regular sibling to make us all feel better about not having powers. It’s been years since the team worked together. Their surrogate dad is dead and almost everyone shows up for his funeral. No surprise, chaos ensues.

This show blew my mind. I loved it. The last time I binged a show this fast I was in high school. I can’t believe a comic book so wonderfully written has escaped me until now.

Ellen Page stars as one of the children, the normal one if I’m honest. Usually I’m not a fan of her acting. But I must admit I think this is the perfect roll for her. The character is detached, emotionally unavailable, and very ordinary. Just like her. The other main casting is phenomenal too. I can’t say how much I enjoyed this show enough.

Take some time out. Watch Umbrella Academy. You won’t regret it.

All out of Pepper

Avengers Endgame

It’s no surprise to anyone that there are new rumors floating around Endgame. Reddit seems to be a hotbed of these theories and rumors.

But the biggest surprise comes in the form of an official retirement from one of the supporting cast, Gwyneth Paltrow. Pepper Potts has been part of the MCU since Iron Man, the very beginning, but new reports are coming out that Avengers Endgame will be her last.

This isn’t the first time Paltrow has quit. After Avengers Age of Ultron she quit and was subsequently missing from Spider-Man Homecoming. She returned as Pepper in Avengers Infinity War but now it appears Avengers 4 will be the last.

Why should you care?

First it means Tony’s dream from Infinity War about them having a kid won’t happen. There will be no little Starks running around to take up their fathers heavy mantle.

That also means even if by some miracle she does put in the Rescue armor, she won’t be the new Iron Man either.

So now we look to the kid from Iron Man 3 to take over as Iron Man. Because it won’t me Pepper.

Girlfriend Game Guide Episode 2- Arkham Knight

Arkham Knight

So this is (according to my 32 seconds of googling) apparently an older game where you play as Batman. Now, I think Batman is scary. I cried and couldn’t sleep well for like a week after seeing the Dark Knight. Basically every backstory in this universe makes me stop and say “dang that’s pretty effed up”. So let’s just say I was more than a tad surprised to know that there’s a world where this gets WORSE and EVEN darker. My little innocent heart can’t take it. Like the literal second cut scene is nightmare zombies taking over a restaurant. Most of the story is spent hunting for the Arkham Knight (which, spoiler) is just a disgruntled Robin and I guessed it like two minutes after his introduction. Pretty predictable  and repetitive missions get a little boring to watch.

So as far as a story goes this ones depressing and awful and tragic. Not my cup of tea. Also it probably doesn’t help that ry isn’t super great at it and I have to watch the same pieces over and over again.

Rating: Two out of Four Batarangs.

The Bricks Return

LEGO movie 2: the second part.

Everything’s NOT awesome in the world of our LEGO friends. What makes me super happy is it picks up right where the last movie left off with the duplo characters coming in to take over. Once again the movie has impressive animation, a catchy song and a cute story line. Sure there may be no big huge twist in this film like there was in the first one but it’s also a good film with enough excitement and energy to keep you on your toes.

What this movie does shockingly well however is entertain the adults they know are being taken to this film. For example, Chris Pratt’s other character Rex is just a hodgepodge of all of his famous characters (including a joke of chiseled features that were hidden under baby fat). It’s a very self aware film and that’s always fun for me to see.

Don’t listen to the reviews that say it’s not a great movie. In my opinion adults get stuck in this idea that all children’s movies will be some Pixar level deep commentary on society. A kids film doesn’t have to have that to be good. Sometimes mindless songs that will certainly get stuck in your head and vomiting glitter is exactly the entertainment required. Don’t go to a kids film expecting depth. Go expecting fun, which is exactly what you will experience here

Not a nICE trailer

Frozen II trailer

Well Disney dropped the Frozen II trailer today and I think they’re taking too much from their purchase of marvel because our characters look like they’re training to defeat Thanos and not have musical numbers in the snow anymore. This trailer is dark. We see favorites Anna Elsa and Kristoff running and jumping and doing intense free climbing. It tells us nothing of a story. Nothing of any sort of villain. Nothing of any plot. Just that it’s going to be intense. The only clue were given is a repeated look at falling leaves. That clearly will mean something but we have no clues now as to what it is (maybe Elsa is going to save us all from climate change).

For someone who very shamelessly loves the frozen story I’m dying here. I have no answers and no idea what to expect. It is little more than a teaser and it’s exactly Disney’s plan. Get us all hooked and anxiously awaiting more.

Evil Returns

Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Capcom has just released their remake of Resident Evil 2 and my nerdy little heart could not be more excited. Being a fan of the Resident Evil franchise, I have watched all the movies multiple times through and played as many of the games as I can get my hands on. Unfortunately, I was born in 1997 which left me with only the 2010 games within my grasp and unable to enjoy the magic of the original games without putting forth some serious effort and money.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Resident Evil and its many installments, basically a pharmaceutical company (a.k.a Umbrella) creates various species of viruses to sell as bioweapons to the American military. These viruses eventually get leaked and essentially turn the inhabitants (and only Doberman Pinscher dogs apparently) of Raccoon City into flesh-eating zombies. It’s up to several kick-butt military, police, and civilians to survive and take Umbrella down. Along the way, they encounter mutated bosses and various Umbrella personnel leaving the enemy pool forever changing to try to kill you.

From what I’ve read and seen, this remake does the original game a courtesy and doesn’t overly modernize the original plot. It takes the story from 1998 and adds the mechanics of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard to make a wholesome playable experience that older gamers would find nostalgia in. One drawback avid RE fans might notice is that there are some recycled environment props and settings from Biohazard that are subtle but still noticeable to those of us who have played both games. Because it is a remake, it isn’t as detrimental to the authenticity of the game than if it had been a newly released stand-alone title. This game is meant to hold us over until the next release.

Specifically, RE2’ s story gives you the option to play as Raccoon City police officer Leon S. Kennedy or college student Claire Redfield. Both characters take totally different paths through the city and occasionally run into each other when sprinting away from zombies. Leon’s goal is to find and destroy the last G-virus sample in Umbrella’s underground secret lab, fighting off several bosses along the way. Claire’s goal is to find and save a little girl named Sherry that has wandered into Umbrella’s underground secret lab. Oh, and did I mention that Umbrella’s underground secret lab had been built right underneath the heart of Raccoon City? Umbrella is kind of a sneaky jerk.

At the end of the day, Resident Evil fans will appreciate this new and improved sequel. If strategic, shoot-em-up, zombie stories tickle your fancy, go ahead and give this one ago. And if you tend to avoid a title like this, this one may surprise you.

It’s up to us to take out Umbrella.

Girlfriend Game Guide Episode 1- Red Dead Redemption II

Red Dead Redemption II

Alrighty team so Ry just recently splurged his Christmas money not into a beautiful gift for his girlfriend or saving money for his wedding but instead bought a PlayStation game. And you know what in watching this one I ain’t even mad. Here’s a secret: I’m hesitant about him and open world games because he forgets there’s a conclusion to them and goofs around. But like this one is great. As a history major in undergrad (we’re learning all the secrets today) I appreciate the care and detail put into this game. It’s phenomenal. And it’s so pretty to look at. But folks here’s the real kicker: I watch people who ARENT Ry play this game. I’ve been sucked down the rabbit hole of internet Let’s Play where I watch people I’m NOT dating waste their life hunting deer and crafting saddle bags. I am entranced people. If you’re stuck watching a game this is a great one.

“Go” play Eevee

Pokémon is a franchise that is no stranger to anyone. With many successful games, a tv series, a trading card game, a mobile game, and many cameos and references in other franchises, Pokémon has taken the world by storm. The latest installation in the series is a two-part one: Pokémon “Let’s go Eevee,” and “Pikachu.”

These two games both closely follow the story and plot of Pokémon Yellow, one of the gen one Pokémon games, which specifically takes inspiration from the show. However, there are a few differences.

One: the art is extremely upscaled from its 8-bit, black and white counterpart. The art style is closer to Legend of Zelda’s Windwaker art, and is extremely pleasing to look at as a result.

Two: the types and references to the outside world. In this game, they retained the modern Pokémon types, and there are npc’s just dying to get you to trade your Kanto Pokémon for their Alola Pokémon (the current gen). The game only has the original 151 Pokémon, but the alolan variants are there as well.

Three: the method of capturing Pokémon. I’m gen one, and in most mainline titles, you run into Pokémon randomly (and extremely frequently). In Let’s Go, that is not the case. The Pokémon appear in the overworld, which means you can avoid them, or target specific ones. Additionally, the capture method is not a battle, it’s the mobile app Pokémon Go’s method: throwing pokeballs at them. In fact, your companion Pokémon is caught in this manner, rather than professor oak just giving one to you.

I’ve been playing Eevee a lot lately, and have to say that as a casual Pokémon fan, and someone who’s played yellow, this game is definitely a fun one. I’m so glad I did end up picking it up.

Reboot the DCEU

Task Force X

The rumor mill is in full swing again for the DCEU and this time it has to do with a soft reboot to the franchise.

A while back James Gunn was gored from Disney and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. After said incident the execs over at DC saw an opportunity. Rumor has it Gunn will be directing the Suicide Squad sequel (say that ten times fast).

New rumors report that Gunn will actually be in charge of rebooting the DCEU with Task Force X, not making it Suicide Squad 2. This isn’t really a surprise. Both Superman and Batman actors have quit, leaving a gaping hole in the DCEU roster. To be completely fair the DCEU has only produced one good movie and one okay movie. If they ever want to reach Marvel and Disney, they really have to step their game up.

Task Force X seems like a good opportunity for DC. It is a great way to introduce some new rogues like Reverse Flash and Penguin before throwing them up against Flash and Batman. It also is a good time to bring out little known villans like Parasite, Captain Cold, or Firehawk, all of whom have never made it into the live action big screen.

If the DCEU does decide to reboot, they have my full support.
