The Bricks Return

LEGO movie 2: the second part.

Everything’s NOT awesome in the world of our LEGO friends. What makes me super happy is it picks up right where the last movie left off with the duplo characters coming in to take over. Once again the movie has impressive animation, a catchy song and a cute story line. Sure there may be no big huge twist in this film like there was in the first one but it’s also a good film with enough excitement and energy to keep you on your toes.

What this movie does shockingly well however is entertain the adults they know are being taken to this film. For example, Chris Pratt’s other character Rex is just a hodgepodge of all of his famous characters (including a joke of chiseled features that were hidden under baby fat). It’s a very self aware film and that’s always fun for me to see.

Don’t listen to the reviews that say it’s not a great movie. In my opinion adults get stuck in this idea that all children’s movies will be some Pixar level deep commentary on society. A kids film doesn’t have to have that to be good. Sometimes mindless songs that will certainly get stuck in your head and vomiting glitter is exactly the entertainment required. Don’t go to a kids film expecting depth. Go expecting fun, which is exactly what you will experience here

Not a nICE trailer

Frozen II trailer

Well Disney dropped the Frozen II trailer today and I think they’re taking too much from their purchase of marvel because our characters look like they’re training to defeat Thanos and not have musical numbers in the snow anymore. This trailer is dark. We see favorites Anna Elsa and Kristoff running and jumping and doing intense free climbing. It tells us nothing of a story. Nothing of any sort of villain. Nothing of any plot. Just that it’s going to be intense. The only clue were given is a repeated look at falling leaves. That clearly will mean something but we have no clues now as to what it is (maybe Elsa is going to save us all from climate change).

For someone who very shamelessly loves the frozen story I’m dying here. I have no answers and no idea what to expect. It is little more than a teaser and it’s exactly Disney’s plan. Get us all hooked and anxiously awaiting more.

Reboot the DCEU

Task Force X

The rumor mill is in full swing again for the DCEU and this time it has to do with a soft reboot to the franchise.

A while back James Gunn was gored from Disney and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. After said incident the execs over at DC saw an opportunity. Rumor has it Gunn will be directing the Suicide Squad sequel (say that ten times fast).

New rumors report that Gunn will actually be in charge of rebooting the DCEU with Task Force X, not making it Suicide Squad 2. This isn’t really a surprise. Both Superman and Batman actors have quit, leaving a gaping hole in the DCEU roster. To be completely fair the DCEU has only produced one good movie and one okay movie. If they ever want to reach Marvel and Disney, they really have to step their game up.

Task Force X seems like a good opportunity for DC. It is a great way to introduce some new rogues like Reverse Flash and Penguin before throwing them up against Flash and Batman. It also is a good time to bring out little known villans like Parasite, Captain Cold, or Firehawk, all of whom have never made it into the live action big screen.

If the DCEU does decide to reboot, they have my full support.

X-men Returnith

Return of the X-men

I’ve relatively ignored the X-men franchise in WetheGeek for one main reason, Disney has the rights and all the other movies don’t matter. Not to say any of them were super fantastic (except Deadpool and Logan) but they really don’t matter. Most of the movies were jokes when they came out and the box office showed as much. Nonetheless they have made 11 movies as part of the franchise. I should probably talk about them or something. Especially with Dark Phoenix coming out this year.

The first X-men came out in 1963 by the legendary Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The series was based around a team of humans with special powers given to them through genetic mutations. It was originally written to show why racism is so bad and how skin color or religious preferences don’t matter.

The movies follow that same ideal. The first X-men movie came out in 2000 and since then we have had one every few years. The plot of the movies follows the young team and its leader, Professor X, while trying to stop mutant haters, radical mutant groups, and the occasional overpowered mutant.

The hardest thing for me to write about is the timeline. It’s all over the place. This series throws cannon out the window and continuously rewrites its history. I don’t know if I could even do it if I tried.

And that in of itself is what makes this series so hard for me to love. The plot is everywhere and nowhere all at once.

.

.

.

.

.

But none of this matters. Disney has bought the rights to the X-men. Even after Dark Phoenix this entire movie series will be pointless. Hopefully Disney can fix the X-men like they did Spider-Man.

Here’s hoping

The Death of Batman

Batman 2021

No that’s not the title of a new movie or comic series, thought it definitely could be. It’s the release date of the next Batman movie. The news finally broke this week that DC will be making another live action Batman movie. The REAL news is that Ben Affleck will not be continuing his role as Batman from the current DCEU.

This isn’t much of a surprise. Rumors have been going around of his departure from the franchise since Batman Vs. Superman. Back in September I wrote an article about the departure of Henry Cavill as Superman and now apparently the other shoe has fallen.

The Justice League has fallen.

I’m not devastated. I think this could be good for the DCEU. With Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad 2 looking to be promising and maybe a much needed soft reboot to the franchise. Now we can finally have the DC heroes we want, because to be honest everything except Wonder Woman has disappointed me.

Only time will tell

A Twist on Normal Streaming

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch

Back in December, the popular Netflix anthology series Black Mirror added another strange tale to their ranks. Bandersnatch is a standalone film that brings choose-your-own adventures to a whole new level. The story surrounds a young videogame designer, Stefan, in the 1980s who is attempting to adapt his favorite choose-your-own-adventure novel into a visual medium. It’s a psychological thriller that causes just as much chaos for the viewer as the protagonist.

In the beginning, you make a series of seemingly insignificant decisions to get the feel for how the film lays out the plot. Without providing any serious spoilers, there are many different ways to make a poor or detrimental choice that takes you to a less-than-ideal ending. But it’s what the film’s algorithm does that’s the best part. When you get that early ending, it takes you back to the scene before the “bad” choice, and let’s you choose the other option as a way of correcting the mistake and allowing you to see the rest of the story and every possible ending.

It wouldn’t be a classic episode of Black Mirror without several secrets and plot twists that leave you scratching your head wondering, “What the *bleep* just happened?!?” Why would the Bandersnatch creators make the viewer choose the story if there wasn’t any real interaction between the audience and the characters? That’s right. You guessed it. A fourth wall break. Stefan, the guy you control the decisions of, figures out he’s being manipulated by an outside force to make these decisions. So to be a smart alec, it’s a choose-your-own-adventure novel within a choose-your-own-adventure game within a choose-your-own-adventure film. Does that mean our very human existence is a choose-your-own-adventure universe? Mind blown.

Unfortunately, a project as well-received as this doesn’t come without backlash. According to an article from TheVerge.com, the publisher of the Choose Your Own Adventure book series, Chooseco, is suing Netflix for trademark infringement at the amount of at least $25 million. Their main reasoning is since Bandersnatch is so dark and geared toward adults, it will ruin Chooseco’s reputation for publishing family-friendly entertainment. Netflix is such a large entity in the industry, the chances of them losing this battle are very slim. Chooseco can try though.

Netflix has been on fire with their Originals lately. From Stranger Things to Tidying Up with Marie Kondo to Orange is the New Black to The Seven Deadly Sins, there are nearly limitless options available on this legendary streaming platform. The next time you’re scrolling through your watch list, just pick a Netflix Original. The worst that could happen is that you’ll hate it and have to pick another one. Eventually, you’ll end up sucked into an intense show you just can’t stop binging…like Black Mirror.

Well, you know where I’ll be.

The Wick Returns

I just watched the John Wick: Chapter 3-Parabellum trailer.

To be completely honest off the bat, I am a complete sucker for these kinds of movies: the perfect assassin faced with uncountable enemies is just thrilling to watch (bonus points if the assassin is cold hearted or is callous to death) and by no means have any background in film reviews or predictions.

I love the John Wick series as a whole so here is my two cents from the trailor-

The trailer shows us that John’s Excommunicado that was announced in the second film taking in effect, putting 40 million on his head via the High Table’s creed. John runs to two different women: one called the Director (Anjelica Huston)

who John seemingly needed a rosery to gain an audience with and another assassin Sofia (Halle Berry) who seems to assist him. There are numerous cut aways to scenes of gun fights, a motorcycle chase, a (probably) final fight in room full of glass skulls and John walking up a sand dune.

We knew from the very first film that there would be all sorts of trouble after John went out for revenge and, thus far, the director has done a good job with answering the consequences of reentering the assassin world in the second film. This third film will probably tie John’s story up in a beautiful Windsor knot as we watch him try to flee the world he forced himself back into.

My one worry while watching the trailor is how Halle Berry’s Sofia is going to do next to Keanu Reeves’ John. Mr. Reeves has done serious training to become John Wick, just take a quick Google search to find videos of Mr. Reeves training with a gun to understand what I mean. That training and dedication translates beautifully over to the big screen that every single move, though done in a less lethal way, is believable to the audience. Ms. Berry does have a whole Instagram story dedicated to her training for this movie but, thus far, it doesn’t show me the power or finality that Mr. Reeves possess in his. This may be because most of hers are martial arts while his is shooting but I will never know until I watch it when it releases in May.

The word “Parabellum” also is an interesting word choice. Not only is it the name of a Germen pistol but also is a Latin phrase that loosely translates to “Prepare for War”. Take that where you will.

Do you have any predicitons?

Feel free to comment!

The Mortal Engine of Aquaman

In an effort to get to new content I’m going to streamline a few of my reviews. The first set of reviews are for Mortal Engines and Aquaman.

Mortal Engines

While super pretty it left me wanting a lot more. It didn’t wow me and obviously I wasn’t the only one. It hasn’t made much since its opening and kinda rightly so. It came out at the wrong time of year behind giants like Spiderverse and Aquaman. I would recommend waiting till it comes out on Netflix instead of paying for it.

I give it a 4/10 ☹️

Aquaman

It’s DC and that pretty much says it all. It wasn’t terrible I’ll admit. I had fun. But it wasn’t great either. The tone was all over the place, Black Manta was a major disappointment, and it was extremely predictable. It was another movie that left me wanting more. I’m sad DC didn’t have another Wonder Woman level hit. But then again DC just hasn’t cracked the code yet.

I give it a 6/10 😐

I’ll see you geeks and nerds later!

Marry Poppins still delightful

Mary Poppins Returns

I grew up in a house where you loved Mary Poppins or you were banished out into the cold abyss never to return again. So needless to say I was skeptical about how good it could be. I knew the cast was amazing but were they going to be THAT amazing. I was pleasantly surprised.

Sure it is very clear that Disney wants to cram as much of the nostalgia without doing a complete redo of the first movie (instead of kites we fly balloons. Instead of chimney sweeps being the lower class aide whom assists us on our way home its gas lamp lighters….they even tap dance too). But it was done in such a way that felt fresh and nostalgic- a weird combo that could only be done by Disney.

Lastly do NOT let anyone tell you that Emily Blunt is not a superstar Mary because they’re just sad and wrong. She is easily the best part of the movie and Disney’s best choice in the recreation.

All in all a solid B. Great choice for a family or a person wanting to relive their childhood.

Spidey swings into our Hearts

Let’s talk about the best film of 2018…

Spoilers. As always.

The plot of Spiderverse follows its comic book counterpart fairly closely. The story follows a young Miles Morales as he gets spider powers, watches his Spider-Man die, and ends up teaming up with a different Spider-Man (Peter Parker) from a different universe. The new Peter wants to get back to his universe and Miles tries to help him. That’s a very basic overview.

In a very simplistic view that doesn’t sound too bad. It’s adventurous and enjoyable. But Spiderverse is more than a happy go lucky coming of age John Hughes style movie. We do see Miles start to grow up and deal with things most kids do like new schools and parents who don’t understand.

But it goes farther.

Miles watches his hero, Spider-Man, get ruthlessly murdered by the most foreboding version of Kingpin ever to grace the screen (sorry Daredevil fans). This is not long after Miles discovers he too has spider powers. Miles goes to the one person he think can help in his time of grief, his uncle Arron. But quickly Miles learns his uncle is an assassin and criminal, the Prowler! The betrayal is shocking and disturbing for even the viewer. Miles ends up accidentally teaming up with five other Spider-People from different worlds to not only stop Kingpin but return each Spider-Person to their world.

Throughout the adventure we are given an amazing soundtrack to listen to. I’m not much of a rap fan but the way the music fits the plot so well, is fantastic. Every song is written and tailored for the movie and its plot.

An incredible story and amazing music aside something else stands out. The art. The style or more accurately styles are astonishing. Each different Spider-Person has their own unique art style that comes off as beautiful and well done. It’s not garish or extremely contradictory. It’s unique and extremely well thought out.

In the end Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse was the best film of 2018 and definitely deserves my rating of

15/10 🔥🔥🔥

I’ll see you geeks and nerds later!
