The Wizarding World Returns

So we’re slightly late to the party but that final trailer for the next fantastic beasts movie was full on amazing. ⠀
We got some stuff confirmed to us (like the woman from the original photo being Nagini is official). In retrospect we should have pretty much all just assumed the fact that snakes in the Harry Potter cannon are solely associated with at least the slytherin house, if not are totally evil.
What was probably the best part of the trailer for me was the fact that Jude Law made my little Harry Potter heart pitter patter. It was so cool to see the traits and quotes of the wizard we looked up to in the series be portrayed in this film as well. He has really mastered the Dumbledore charm and mystery and it is clear that he did his homework. For no other reason than him and my lovely newt will I see this film.

I know for me at least it’s going to be one talked about for awhile.

Dark Phoenix just another bomb?

Dark Phoenix is here. ⠀

In a surprising turn of events Dark Phoenix is being released next year and we get the first trailer drop today. In all honesty I’m shocked the movie is still coming out. ⠀

Dark Phoenix is the next in a long line of mediocre X-men films. The first was released in 2000 simply titled X-Men. X2 was released in 2003, X-Men Last Stand in 2006, X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, X-Men First Class in 2011, X-Men Days of Futures Past in 2014 and X-Men Apocalypse in 2016. All of those being said I’m not listing the other two X-Men franchises Wolverine and Deadpool because they aren’t actually half bad.

But I digress, without getting stuck in the most messed up timeline in a movie franchise (even including Fast and Furious) this is the fourth part in a series following a bunch of superhuman teens who all go to the same school. It’s super complicated but you get the idea.

As I said before I’m surprised this is happening. It shocks me that Fox can still put this out. Fox has recently sold a lot of its movie rights to Disney. There is an article coming out tomorrow if you want to know more about the merger. But it seems this movie is coming out. Now we wait to see if this will be an amazing Marvel film or another X-Men joke.

Suing Telltale

After our report yesterday on Telltale Games a new report has come out saying there is a lawsuit underway. Polygon.com reported on Reddit that a former employee, Vernie Roberts, is suing his former employer in a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit says that Telltale broke California state law by not giving employees advance notice of the closing and firing of some 250 people. To make matters worse rumors are coming out that Telltale did not give any severance and their medical insurance will only last the rest of September.

It seems that Telltale is in deeper trouble then just closing its doors. The staff here at WetheGeek will keep you updated as news arrives.

The fall of Telltale…

I don’t know if you guys are keeping up with the news but Telltale Games offically announced that they are closing shop last Friday.
This company is responsible for games such as:
The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, Batman: The Telltale Series, and Tales of the Boarderlands.
With their recent release of the final chapter of The Walking Dead, it came as a shock to me to hear the news. In their most recent interviews, Telltale Games said that they had “No choice” since they had lost a big financial backer, causing them to cut more then half of their staff.
As of currently these are confirmed:
*Walking Dead might finish. Episode 2 will be released and episodes 3 and 4 will be completed.
*Netflix is still going to push on with the Stranger Things game.
*Everyone is upset.
The company seemed to have been doing well with their series but, according to reports, employees were well aware that the company was under financial strain for the past few years and was under fire from their previous Chief Executive but this hit hard and fast.

Twitter has been revealing a lot of information by not only Telltale but the developers and other employees. Many are upset at how fast everything has happened and some are straight out angry.

But all is not lost. Other game studios like Blizzard are offering to employe the former Telltale workers. So even as this storm continues the gaming community rallies around an amazing team.

Only time can tell what happens next since new information is coming out each hour.

Miraculous Ladybug

I like watching Miraculous Ladybug.
Yes, I know it’s a kid’s show and yes, I am well aware that I am waaaaaay past their target audience but hear me out.
No, I’m going to say this right now, Miraculous Ladybug isn’t like Steven Universe or Avatar: The Last Airbender with their story lines and underlining meanings beneath their cute art style nor is it like Gravity Falls or Adventure Time where viewers just want to know how it ends.
So, why do I, a twentysomething woman with two jobs, decide “Hey, I’m going to dedicate part of my limited amount of free time to watch a children’s program on Netflix.”?
My reasoning is pure and simple:
Miraculous Ladybug is Pure and Simple.
It is about a 14 year old girl in Paris who gains superpowers via a Miraculous and transforms into Ladybug and with her partner Chat Noir, they both must defeat the villainous Hawkmoth and his Akuma while dealing with their own high school problems.
“But wait!” You might say, “Shouldn’t you be stimulating your mind with thought provoking themes and good scripts?”
Of Course! I always will encourage people to watch or read something that challenges you!
However, there are times when something thought provoking and intense might leave you feeling more tired and even depressed at times. I’m not going to tell you to watch The Matrix when your brain is fried. Sometimes there’s just something about a pure and simple plot that lulls the watcher into a safe zone. You already know that Hawkmoth is going to appear and Ladybug and Chat Noir are going to save the day with their special abilities so you don’t really need to focus on anything except the characters.
Seriously, (with the exception of 3 episodes) the only intense thing about Miraculous Ladybug is the love square that the two main characters have (yes, you need to watch it to understand it). Also, because it is a children’s show, you get simple world truths from each episode that give you a nostalgic feel as you watch the characters learn and grow.

Pure and Simple…. Or until the creators decide they can make the show more than just a children’s show.

Pixverse Part 1: The Pixar Truth

Part 1- The Pixar Truth⠀

The Pixar Theory and the Pixar Universe (what I will refer to as the Pixverse from now on) hold several unconventional truths. The first is that the laws of our earth and world do not apply. So discard any reality you know (as if talking toys and bugs wasn’t enough). Second, magic and science are basically the same thing. Throughout this series you will see how science and magic are continuously referred to and interchanged. Third even Pixar has to retcon stuff. So deal with it. There are inconsistencies but what conspiracy theory doesn’t have issues? Forth for this series I will be assuming you have seen every Pixar movie, so I will not be recapping the entire film, just the main Pixverse points. Finally and probably the most important, I’m the one coming up with my own Pixar Theory. This isn’t official. That means I miss stuff and make mistakes. Be nice. Thanks.

Death…

I remember the first time I watched Littlefoot’s mother die.
To give you an idea of how old I was: I remember thinking “So she’s going to take a nap and let Littlefoot go to the Great Valley?” and then hearing my brother whisper, “She’s dead… Right?”
One of the most frustrating moments of my first year as a teacher was being stuck in the middle of a very stressful argument about whether the 5 year olds could sing that a character was dead. It was the main teacher’s opinion that we could not because it sparked a lot of weird conversations within the classroom. Being a musician, I didn’t want to change the traditional song because it didn’t make any sense in context. In the end, it boils down to how willing are you to talk about death with the children and the teacher didn’t want to have to deal with it. Movies like “The Land Before Time” can be the opener on what happens when death comes and coping with it. This may be a bit much for children in the minds of most but it is important to talk about death, especially since it is a fact of life.

“Death does not discriminate between the sinners and the saints. It takes and it takes and it takes and we keep on living anyway.” ~Aaron Burr

PredaDONT!

I guess I should finally talk about the Predator. I’ll be completely honest. It’s not worth your time. Instead of you wasting your money and going and seeing it and me wasting my time writing a long review I’ll make this quick. ⠀

It sucks. ⠀

From poorly written characters and jokes to cheesy CGI. None of its good. You can’t see anything because it’s mostly filmed at night and the plot has more holes then there are dead bodies on screen. Don’t waste your money. Go watch the original. Or better yet Predators from 2010. That’s it. I’m not wasting anymore time on this bomb.

Captain Marvel is my hero

I did not watch this trailer with the idea of trying to glean information about the plot, but I watched it with the mindset of trying to find the Carol I know and love, and the trailer delivered that for me. I am excited about the movie because I saw the Carol who loves to fly and would rather punch someone out instead of talk it out. I saw the Carol who falls and gets back up. I saw Carol in her mohawk. I saw the Carol who is calm in the face of danger.
As you may have noticed, I chose a really specific shot from the trailer for this review. It is Carol balling her hand into a fist. One of my favorite things about the character Carol Danvers is that her go to solution, when things get complicated, is to punch her way out. It is still very rare for female characters to be given power and for that power to be portrayed well. I, when I first started reading about Carol, was very used to the idea that the more powerful a woman becomes, the less feminine she becomes or the more sexualized she becomes. It was never something I could personally relate too. I grew up with the mindset that femininity and power are characteristics that do not belong together, but characters like Carol (and Kara Danvers as Supergirl) are very powerful and feminine. She proves the point that a woman can be powerful, respected, and wear a skirt if she so desires and not be seen as sexual object.
I love Captain Marvel. I started reading the comics of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel back in 2015, and I have been excited about this movie since it was announced in 2015. I remember, at that time, being afraid that people would not understand her and only do the minimal research about her to find that the title of Captain Marvel originally belonged to a man. The movie was announced right around the time that the mantle of Thor was given Jane in the comics, and I thought people might take out their frustration of that situation on Carol. I am glad, however, that times have progressed where characters or even historical figures that were originally white men can now be portrayed either in movies or on stage by people who have often been the minority.

The Deaths of Batman and Superman?

It looks like the DCEU is officially over. Reports are coming out that Henry Cavill is done playing Superman. The DCEU consists of five movies currently out and only one of those is worth watching. Having a 20% success rate compared to the MCUs blockbusters production factory must be hitting the Warner Brothers execs pretty hard. WB is reportedly “shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story featuring a teen superheroine.” According to the Hollywood Reporter. The big blue boy scout defiantly doesn’t fit the “teen” demographic.

I have to admit, most of us around the office aren’t surprised. Cavill has proven himself a successful actor in other movies and is now staring in the Witcher Netflix series. The DCEU hasn’t been that good and honestly needs better casting. The dark grit of the Snyderverse has never resonated well with me. Marvel has been producing action movies that have gravitas and comedy (Infinity War, Black Panther, even Homecoming). The DCEU has always felt like someone who skimmed a couple wikis on DC comics and tried to make movies from it. Only Wonder Woman has been any good. I’m not disappointed to see the DCEU finally be put to rest.

But not all hope is lost Aquaman comes out in December, Shazam next May, Wonder Woman 1984 comes out late 2019, and the Flash is supposed to start filming in the spring. Even without a shared universe I feel that DC can create strong movies. And maybe with the help of Flashpoint we can see the Justice League reunite again.
