DC you’re a disappointment

I’m going to continue the DC news.

I’m disappointed. DC you’ve done it again! Messed something up cause you’re a bunch of corporate twits that suck and have no decency to make decent content.

They are releasing the Teen Titans live action show on Netflix everywhere

…except the US…

I can’t express my anger at this. Now I’m officially not buying their service strictly because they are doing this. I may have to find… other ways… of watching the show.

DC you screwed up

Pixverse Part 3: Robot Rise

Part 3- Robot Rise

When we left off I had introduced you to two of the three factions that fight for dominance in the Pixverse, animals and man. I also showed you that animals are intelligent and magic exists.

Now you should meet the ones who destroyed humanity. And you can thank Syndrome for the end of mankind.

Syndrome was in many ways too smart for his own good. In the 1950-60s he created AI (artificial intelligence). You see the intelligence of his creations in the first Incredibles. The Omnidroid destroys part of the city and even learns that it can be controlled. The robot does it’s best to stop the humans from shutting it down.

The Omnidroid uses a special piece of technology. It’s the zero point energy most notably used by Syndrome to freeze the Incredibles in place. This energy seeps into everything over the next 60 years or so.

Supers eventually die out after Incredibles 2 but humanity remains. And so does much of Syndromes technology. Toy Story and Toy Story 2 introduce us to a company that becomes very important later, Buy n Large (BnL). This company was built off of the inventions of Syndrome. They continue to use the AI and zero point energy he created. In many ways they use it very recklessly because it has started to seep into inanimate objects, like toys.

This zero point energy feeds off of human emotions as seen by Syndromes anger and the humans around Woody and the gang.

By the early 2000s animals have continued to evolve. We see this in Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory. The same zero point energy that affects inanimate objects also changes animals. They have learned how to speak to one another and coexist in harmony.

This all leads us up to the first war. Which we will cover next week.

Fans vs Fanatics

Fan or Fanatic

Fandoms have crossed a line. Actually I really shouldn’t say fandoms, it’s the fans that have gone too far. Breaking into YouTubers homes, shooting up video game tournaments, bullying celebrities because you hate their characters, casting characters based on antiquated ideals, the list goes on of how fans have crossed the line into crazed fanatics.

None of this is okay. It needs to stop.

There are enough examples of fans going too far to make it an issue. Look at Star Wars fans. It’s one thing to start a campaign to remake a not so great movie. It’s another to cyber bully not one but several different actors from the series, most notably Kelly Tran (Rose Tico), Hayden Frye (Anakin Skywalker), and Ahmed Best (Jar Jar Binks). I do not fault fans for hating those characters. In many ways they were all annoying and obnoxious. I draw the line when these stars contemplate suicide because of all the hate. Kelly in early 2018 deleted her Instagram because of the abuse. Disliking a character and bullying an actor are completely different things. No person has any right to do that unless the actor is on r/roastme on Reddit. I do not think any Star Wars fan would turn down an opportunity to be in a movie, even if they were ten times as annoying as an Ewok. Bullying anyone is not acceptable for any reason.

Stalking and breaking into celebrities houses definitely crosses that fan to fanatic line. I really do not care if they are a YouTuber or not, fans need to learn restraint. January 26, 2018 Gavin Free of Rooster Teeth and Slow Mo Guys on YouTube, had his house broken into. Gavin and his girlfriend Meg Turney has to hide in the closet from a fan with a gun. The fan had shot the front door open and was looking for the couple. Reports say the intruder had an obsession with Meg and wanted to kill Gavin. The police stopped the fan when they arrived. Once again a fan has taken it too far and become a fanatic.

My last example hits a bit closer to home. It happened on the WetheGeek Facebook page. A long time supporter of WetheGeek content posted some very aggressive and negative comments about the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor on the hit show Doctor Who. Disagreeing is fine and we encourage healthy debate on our pages. But the comments and actions that were taken by the fan were sexist and unacceptable. WetheGeek had to change rules and policies because of the interaction. Not because the staff handled it inappropriately but because the reality is it will probably happen again.

These are just a few examples of fans going too far. The list goes on and it hurts knowing fans can become so toxic. People need to realize that change is okay.

I’m even guilty of taking a fandom too far. I was very much opposed to the replacement of Tony Stark in Marvel Comics in 2016 by Iron Heart. But then I read the comics and realized what potential the comics had and hopefully a spot in the MCU.

If we are willing to see change as a positive over a negative it makes things a lot better for fans and creators alike.

Be a fan. Not a fanatic.

Return of the Fire Nation?

This month we were alerted to an interesting new development from Netflix: an Avatar the Last Airbender live-action show. This show would be directed by showrunners Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, a strong positive sign for the quality of the translation to live-action. The show is supposedly going to dive deeper into the cultures and lore of the world of Avatar, and the cast is reported to be pulled from the cultures each nation was based on (for example, the water tribe was based on the Inuit and Sireniki culture). The music will once again be done by the amazingly talented Jeremy Zuckerman, and the overall story will hopefully follow the themes and feel of the original.

The fact that this series is live-action has many fans pointing to the last attempt at a live-action adaptation by Shyamalan, not a great comparison to be made (as the ‘movie’ currently sits at a score of 20 on Metacritic, 4.5/10 on IMDB, and 6% on Rotten Tomatoes). However, the creators of the show had little if anything to do with the film, and efforts certainly seem to be in effect to remove that blemish from memory.

I personally am of two minds about this: On the one hand, I love the Avatar franchise, with its wonderful score, writing, characters, and worldbuilding, and would love to see that come to live-action and draw in a much larger audience. On the other hand, I for one haven’t forgotten the issues with the movie, and in fact, the issues with the other attempts Netflix has made of turning cartoons to live-action (let’s not even get me started on Death Note).

If this works, and I sincerely hope it does, I hope that Netflix and other companies learn from the success, and compare this show to other attempts that failed. The thing that can make or break this series’ success will be the involvement of those who truly care about the source material, but aren’t afraid to make something new. I don’t want EXACTLY the cartoon for this show, nor do I expect it. I do expect something different and new. However, I expect something GOOD.
Although, If Netflix avoids making more cartoon-to-live-action shows, I certainly won’t complain.

That’s been my opinion and update on the Avatar Netflix series, but please, feel free to comment with your opinion. As the man Phillip DeFranco always says “It’s a conversation, so let me hear what you think.”

The Disney Takeover

The Disney Takeover…⠀

I haven’t really talked about the Disney Fox merger. In all honesty I’ve kinda avoided it. I have extremely mixed feelings about the take over. Most of you probably don’t even care. It doesn’t really mess with your life so why worry? Well you should. ⠀

Let’s take a look to see what Disney just acquired from Fox. ⠀

1. Disney now has the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool

2. Disney gets distribution rights to Star Wars Episode IV

3. Disney now owns Planet if the Apes, Avatar (Blue people), I’ve Age, Home Alone, Doctor Doolittle, and Alvin and the Chipmunks

4. Disney now owns all Fox Sports networks. That includes everything from hockey to Nascar

5. Disney now owns Sky which is a large European media company

6. National Geographic. Yeah. That too.

That’s… that’s a lot of properties. It was more then just a movie deal. It was the rights to a huge chunk of entertainment world wide.

So why does this matter?

Disney has always been a giant. They own ABC and ESPN. Not to mention Pixar and all the parks they have around the world. In some ways this is great. The MCU can expand and I can go watch all my favorite heroes for the next twenty years. On the other hand this is a catastrophe because Disney is dancing the line between monopoly and normal business. Only time will tell the repercussions that will happen.

The Wizarding World Returns

So we’re slightly late to the party but that final trailer for the next fantastic beasts movie was full on amazing. ⠀
We got some stuff confirmed to us (like the woman from the original photo being Nagini is official). In retrospect we should have pretty much all just assumed the fact that snakes in the Harry Potter cannon are solely associated with at least the slytherin house, if not are totally evil.
What was probably the best part of the trailer for me was the fact that Jude Law made my little Harry Potter heart pitter patter. It was so cool to see the traits and quotes of the wizard we looked up to in the series be portrayed in this film as well. He has really mastered the Dumbledore charm and mystery and it is clear that he did his homework. For no other reason than him and my lovely newt will I see this film.

I know for me at least it’s going to be one talked about for awhile.

Dark Phoenix just another bomb?

Dark Phoenix is here. ⠀

In a surprising turn of events Dark Phoenix is being released next year and we get the first trailer drop today. In all honesty I’m shocked the movie is still coming out. ⠀

Dark Phoenix is the next in a long line of mediocre X-men films. The first was released in 2000 simply titled X-Men. X2 was released in 2003, X-Men Last Stand in 2006, X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009, X-Men First Class in 2011, X-Men Days of Futures Past in 2014 and X-Men Apocalypse in 2016. All of those being said I’m not listing the other two X-Men franchises Wolverine and Deadpool because they aren’t actually half bad.

But I digress, without getting stuck in the most messed up timeline in a movie franchise (even including Fast and Furious) this is the fourth part in a series following a bunch of superhuman teens who all go to the same school. It’s super complicated but you get the idea.

As I said before I’m surprised this is happening. It shocks me that Fox can still put this out. Fox has recently sold a lot of its movie rights to Disney. There is an article coming out tomorrow if you want to know more about the merger. But it seems this movie is coming out. Now we wait to see if this will be an amazing Marvel film or another X-Men joke.

Suing Telltale

After our report yesterday on Telltale Games a new report has come out saying there is a lawsuit underway. Polygon.com reported on Reddit that a former employee, Vernie Roberts, is suing his former employer in a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit says that Telltale broke California state law by not giving employees advance notice of the closing and firing of some 250 people. To make matters worse rumors are coming out that Telltale did not give any severance and their medical insurance will only last the rest of September.

It seems that Telltale is in deeper trouble then just closing its doors. The staff here at WetheGeek will keep you updated as news arrives.

The fall of Telltale…

I don’t know if you guys are keeping up with the news but Telltale Games offically announced that they are closing shop last Friday.
This company is responsible for games such as:
The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, Batman: The Telltale Series, and Tales of the Boarderlands.
With their recent release of the final chapter of The Walking Dead, it came as a shock to me to hear the news. In their most recent interviews, Telltale Games said that they had “No choice” since they had lost a big financial backer, causing them to cut more then half of their staff.
As of currently these are confirmed:
*Walking Dead might finish. Episode 2 will be released and episodes 3 and 4 will be completed.
*Netflix is still going to push on with the Stranger Things game.
*Everyone is upset.
The company seemed to have been doing well with their series but, according to reports, employees were well aware that the company was under financial strain for the past few years and was under fire from their previous Chief Executive but this hit hard and fast.

Twitter has been revealing a lot of information by not only Telltale but the developers and other employees. Many are upset at how fast everything has happened and some are straight out angry.

But all is not lost. Other game studios like Blizzard are offering to employe the former Telltale workers. So even as this storm continues the gaming community rallies around an amazing team.

Only time can tell what happens next since new information is coming out each hour.

Captain Marvel is my hero

I did not watch this trailer with the idea of trying to glean information about the plot, but I watched it with the mindset of trying to find the Carol I know and love, and the trailer delivered that for me. I am excited about the movie because I saw the Carol who loves to fly and would rather punch someone out instead of talk it out. I saw the Carol who falls and gets back up. I saw Carol in her mohawk. I saw the Carol who is calm in the face of danger.
As you may have noticed, I chose a really specific shot from the trailer for this review. It is Carol balling her hand into a fist. One of my favorite things about the character Carol Danvers is that her go to solution, when things get complicated, is to punch her way out. It is still very rare for female characters to be given power and for that power to be portrayed well. I, when I first started reading about Carol, was very used to the idea that the more powerful a woman becomes, the less feminine she becomes or the more sexualized she becomes. It was never something I could personally relate too. I grew up with the mindset that femininity and power are characteristics that do not belong together, but characters like Carol (and Kara Danvers as Supergirl) are very powerful and feminine. She proves the point that a woman can be powerful, respected, and wear a skirt if she so desires and not be seen as sexual object.
I love Captain Marvel. I started reading the comics of Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel back in 2015, and I have been excited about this movie since it was announced in 2015. I remember, at that time, being afraid that people would not understand her and only do the minimal research about her to find that the title of Captain Marvel originally belonged to a man. The movie was announced right around the time that the mantle of Thor was given Jane in the comics, and I thought people might take out their frustration of that situation on Carol. I am glad, however, that times have progressed where characters or even historical figures that were originally white men can now be portrayed either in movies or on stage by people who have often been the minority.
