**Restart**

We’ve been discussing this a lot in the office and we are finally happy to announce a new branch in our team…

**Restart**

Luna and myself are spearheading the department with the help of many of our current writers.

We want to create a gaming division of WetheGeek. Dedicated to reviews and news of all the latest games and even some retro ones. There are many of us on the team that love to game, everything from Super Smash Bro to GTA V to Halo and beyond. We’ve got you covered with the latest updates, news, and reviews of stuff that has hit shelves.

With the start of this new division we are starting a new series. Here is the author to introduce it herself.

Hey y’all Luna here. So excited to introduce my new weekly series- Girlfriend Game Guide. It’s for all the people stuck perpetually being player two and having no idea what the term “right bumper” means in playing a game. I’ve spent a lot of time recently getting exposed to gaming with my boyfriend investing in a PlayStation. Growing up all I had was a knockoff Japanese dance mat that plugged into my VCR and an Nintendog (…..wonder if that thing died on me). So here’s MY take on the hot new games. Time to see what the side line player thinks about your favorite pastime.

We thank you for joining us as we start **Restart** and hope you all like it as much as we do!

X-men Returnith

Return of the X-men

I’ve relatively ignored the X-men franchise in WetheGeek for one main reason, Disney has the rights and all the other movies don’t matter. Not to say any of them were super fantastic (except Deadpool and Logan) but they really don’t matter. Most of the movies were jokes when they came out and the box office showed as much. Nonetheless they have made 11 movies as part of the franchise. I should probably talk about them or something. Especially with Dark Phoenix coming out this year.

The first X-men came out in 1963 by the legendary Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The series was based around a team of humans with special powers given to them through genetic mutations. It was originally written to show why racism is so bad and how skin color or religious preferences don’t matter.

The movies follow that same ideal. The first X-men movie came out in 2000 and since then we have had one every few years. The plot of the movies follows the young team and its leader, Professor X, while trying to stop mutant haters, radical mutant groups, and the occasional overpowered mutant.

The hardest thing for me to write about is the timeline. It’s all over the place. This series throws cannon out the window and continuously rewrites its history. I don’t know if I could even do it if I tried.

And that in of itself is what makes this series so hard for me to love. The plot is everywhere and nowhere all at once.

.

.

.

.

.

But none of this matters. Disney has bought the rights to the X-men. Even after Dark Phoenix this entire movie series will be pointless. Hopefully Disney can fix the X-men like they did Spider-Man.

Here’s hoping

The Death of Batman

Batman 2021

No that’s not the title of a new movie or comic series, thought it definitely could be. It’s the release date of the next Batman movie. The news finally broke this week that DC will be making another live action Batman movie. The REAL news is that Ben Affleck will not be continuing his role as Batman from the current DCEU.

This isn’t much of a surprise. Rumors have been going around of his departure from the franchise since Batman Vs. Superman. Back in September I wrote an article about the departure of Henry Cavill as Superman and now apparently the other shoe has fallen.

The Justice League has fallen.

I’m not devastated. I think this could be good for the DCEU. With Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad 2 looking to be promising and maybe a much needed soft reboot to the franchise. Now we can finally have the DC heroes we want, because to be honest everything except Wonder Woman has disappointed me.

Only time will tell

A Series of Unfortunate Events

So it’s been about a month since the end of Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. I know that I really love writing about nostalgic things the media has brought back from my childhood and saying great things about them- so this won’t be any different. The drama (which is funny and light enough for kids too) is awesome and Neil Patrick Harris is a total gem as Count Olaf. I actually kinda like the horrible kidnapping arsonist now. And he is far superior to the Jim Carey Olaf (which let’s pretend never happened)

What made me the most happy, and what all remakes should taken note of is just how much people love the remakes when you follow the same story. The show brings all the elements of the books that people love (breaking the third wall, lots of sarcasm) and puts them on the screen. That, truly, is a delightful treat in a world where the name of the movie game is to make money and not to tell the story as written. If you’re thinking about a remake, absolutely take notes from this Very Fascinating Drama. Beatrice would love it.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Hero

If you haven’t noticed, I have a growing fascination with Spider-Man.

After putting in my time, finishing every single fight and objective, unlocking every suit, and playing ever side quest, I’m done. That includes the three DLCs too. For now I can hang up the mask and take a vacation from web slinging and crime fighting.

But before I do that I want to talk about the friendly neighborhood hero. Potential spoilers as always.

The story follows an older Peter Parker. He has been Spider-Man for eight years. In that time he has fought various villains but some of the most notable from his rogues gallery are missing. The Green Goblin, Venom, Carnage, and most importantly Doc Oct have not fought the Web Slinger yet.

We are introduced to people who would become such villains as Venom and Green Goblin but they never put on their costumes.

The main story follows Peter and his relationships. Most importantly his relationship with Otto Octavius. As Peter we watch Ottos descent into madness. It’s painful and terrifying to watch. You can’t help but feel for him after he loses not only his funding for his work but also his body to disease. It’s heartbreaking.

As Spidey uncovers the evil plot Doc Oct has created we also meet other villains like Mr. Negative, Rhino, Shocker, Vulture, Kingpin, Electro, Scorpion, Tombstone, Taskmaster, Screwball, and Hammerhead. All of which have very similar origins to their comic counterparts. It’s amazing how well done each character is.

We get a look at Pete’s private life and his relationships with Mary Jane, Aunt May, and the future Spider-Man Miles Morales.

All in all the story was heart wrenching and intoxicating. The game was hard to put down. Even the extra content was worth the price. I didn’t regret a single second of play. Each science quest, Taskmaster challenge, and boss fight was worth it.

You can tell Insomniac wants and plans to make a sequel. They set the plot up nicely and I fully expect all of us to be on the edge of our seats once they do.

Great job Insomniac.

Time to Smash

Super Smash Brothers is a series that resonates with a large fan base. It’s a fighter game, with an occasional storyline, and is casual enough to be played as a party game.

The release of Super Smash Bros Ultimate in late December 2018 was a huge victory on Nintendo’s part. The fans of the series had been hounding Nintendo to release a port or new game to the Switch since the switch had come out nearly two years earlier. The resulting game however, was more than what was expected. The game clocks in with 74 baseline fighters, as well as 6 DLC characters scheduled for release, as well as an absolutely MASSIVE storyline mode, 876 songs, and 1300 spirits to collect. It was a beast of a game, and it was a blast to finish.

When I say finish, I mean the story mode. I am not Jirard the Completionist, and it took even him up until this last week to fully complete it. I’m talking about the story mode.

To say that this game dwarfs any other in the franchise is an understatement. Everything has been streamlined and optimized, almost every previous style of fighting returned, and overall, the game was easy for newbies to pick up.

I will have to say that the release schedule for the DLC is disheartening, and the online was absolutely atrocious before the patch (and it still isn’t fully fixed), but most games have a few issues, and these are either mostly fixed or trivial.

Overall, SSBU is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of its creators, and a blast to play.

Talking with a Serial Killer

Ted Bundy Tapes

Don’t watch alone Netflix tells you….and that may be a good choice. Especially if you’re a 18-25 year old woman and you’re not prepared to question if everyone you know might possibly be a serial killer.

Having hit the 30th anniversary of the death of Bundy Netflix has turned the tapes used by Bundy to confess his murders of anywhere from 30-100 woman across America ranging from Washington to Florida.

I will say I am a huge lover of the true crime documentary and the good old cop and forensic drama but I do not do gore. If that is a concern of yours than you’re totally safe with these tapes. What you will find however is a major creep factor which is rooted in how unsettlingly normal Bundy was most of his life. It won’t have the shock and awe factor of body parts and blood but it will make you question what it would be like to be friends with, dating, or even the child of a serial killer who’s masquerading as a totally normal person. It is a great documentary and my only complaint is that there isn’t more.

Netflix should realize the market for these serial killer and crime documentaries and keep cranking them out.

A Twist on Normal Streaming

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch

Back in December, the popular Netflix anthology series Black Mirror added another strange tale to their ranks. Bandersnatch is a standalone film that brings choose-your-own adventures to a whole new level. The story surrounds a young videogame designer, Stefan, in the 1980s who is attempting to adapt his favorite choose-your-own-adventure novel into a visual medium. It’s a psychological thriller that causes just as much chaos for the viewer as the protagonist.

In the beginning, you make a series of seemingly insignificant decisions to get the feel for how the film lays out the plot. Without providing any serious spoilers, there are many different ways to make a poor or detrimental choice that takes you to a less-than-ideal ending. But it’s what the film’s algorithm does that’s the best part. When you get that early ending, it takes you back to the scene before the “bad” choice, and let’s you choose the other option as a way of correcting the mistake and allowing you to see the rest of the story and every possible ending.

It wouldn’t be a classic episode of Black Mirror without several secrets and plot twists that leave you scratching your head wondering, “What the *bleep* just happened?!?” Why would the Bandersnatch creators make the viewer choose the story if there wasn’t any real interaction between the audience and the characters? That’s right. You guessed it. A fourth wall break. Stefan, the guy you control the decisions of, figures out he’s being manipulated by an outside force to make these decisions. So to be a smart alec, it’s a choose-your-own-adventure novel within a choose-your-own-adventure game within a choose-your-own-adventure film. Does that mean our very human existence is a choose-your-own-adventure universe? Mind blown.

Unfortunately, a project as well-received as this doesn’t come without backlash. According to an article from TheVerge.com, the publisher of the Choose Your Own Adventure book series, Chooseco, is suing Netflix for trademark infringement at the amount of at least $25 million. Their main reasoning is since Bandersnatch is so dark and geared toward adults, it will ruin Chooseco’s reputation for publishing family-friendly entertainment. Netflix is such a large entity in the industry, the chances of them losing this battle are very slim. Chooseco can try though.

Netflix has been on fire with their Originals lately. From Stranger Things to Tidying Up with Marie Kondo to Orange is the New Black to The Seven Deadly Sins, there are nearly limitless options available on this legendary streaming platform. The next time you’re scrolling through your watch list, just pick a Netflix Original. The worst that could happen is that you’ll hate it and have to pick another one. Eventually, you’ll end up sucked into an intense show you just can’t stop binging…like Black Mirror.

Well, you know where I’ll be.

The Wick Returns

I just watched the John Wick: Chapter 3-Parabellum trailer.

To be completely honest off the bat, I am a complete sucker for these kinds of movies: the perfect assassin faced with uncountable enemies is just thrilling to watch (bonus points if the assassin is cold hearted or is callous to death) and by no means have any background in film reviews or predictions.

I love the John Wick series as a whole so here is my two cents from the trailor-

The trailer shows us that John’s Excommunicado that was announced in the second film taking in effect, putting 40 million on his head via the High Table’s creed. John runs to two different women: one called the Director (Anjelica Huston)

who John seemingly needed a rosery to gain an audience with and another assassin Sofia (Halle Berry) who seems to assist him. There are numerous cut aways to scenes of gun fights, a motorcycle chase, a (probably) final fight in room full of glass skulls and John walking up a sand dune.

We knew from the very first film that there would be all sorts of trouble after John went out for revenge and, thus far, the director has done a good job with answering the consequences of reentering the assassin world in the second film. This third film will probably tie John’s story up in a beautiful Windsor knot as we watch him try to flee the world he forced himself back into.

My one worry while watching the trailor is how Halle Berry’s Sofia is going to do next to Keanu Reeves’ John. Mr. Reeves has done serious training to become John Wick, just take a quick Google search to find videos of Mr. Reeves training with a gun to understand what I mean. That training and dedication translates beautifully over to the big screen that every single move, though done in a less lethal way, is believable to the audience. Ms. Berry does have a whole Instagram story dedicated to her training for this movie but, thus far, it doesn’t show me the power or finality that Mr. Reeves possess in his. This may be because most of hers are martial arts while his is shooting but I will never know until I watch it when it releases in May.

The word “Parabellum” also is an interesting word choice. Not only is it the name of a Germen pistol but also is a Latin phrase that loosely translates to “Prepare for War”. Take that where you will.

Do you have any predicitons?

Feel free to comment!

The Mortal Engine of Aquaman

In an effort to get to new content I’m going to streamline a few of my reviews. The first set of reviews are for Mortal Engines and Aquaman.

Mortal Engines

While super pretty it left me wanting a lot more. It didn’t wow me and obviously I wasn’t the only one. It hasn’t made much since its opening and kinda rightly so. It came out at the wrong time of year behind giants like Spiderverse and Aquaman. I would recommend waiting till it comes out on Netflix instead of paying for it.

I give it a 4/10 ☹️

Aquaman

It’s DC and that pretty much says it all. It wasn’t terrible I’ll admit. I had fun. But it wasn’t great either. The tone was all over the place, Black Manta was a major disappointment, and it was extremely predictable. It was another movie that left me wanting more. I’m sad DC didn’t have another Wonder Woman level hit. But then again DC just hasn’t cracked the code yet.

I give it a 6/10 😐

I’ll see you geeks and nerds later!
