Miles Morales Movie (finally)!

With the holiday movie rush starting this month (scary movie September) we get a chance to peek ahead and mark our calendars. In the next few months alone I know there are eight blockbusters coming out I want to see. Wreck it Ralph is finally getting his much deserved sequel and Aquaman is getting a solo movie. Our entire staff has movies they are excited for that are coming out in the rest of 2018. Most of our staff (probably Luna the most) is excited for Crimes of Grindelwald. I know MKAmethyst and I are ready for Wreck it Ralph. KaytheHuman has not stopped talking about Disney’s Nutcracker. TheDoctor and I are reserved about Venom. We are afraid it will just be a turd in the wind. Mabel is really excited for Kingsmen 3, whoops I mean Robin Hood. But the movie I’m most excited about? Spider-Man into the Spiderverse. I can’t express enough how good it looks. And with the release of the New Spider-Man game on PS4 the hype should be very real.

For those of you who haven’t seen the trailers Into the Spiderverse is going to revolve around you Miles Morales (not the normal Peter Parker) and his adventures as Spider-Man. The cast includes Nick Cage, Hailiee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, and Lily Tomlin.

I’m excited and ready for a refreshing new take on Spider-Man. Here is to seeing Miles on the big screen this December!

Thanos did nothing wrong?

I was reading through the Thanosdidnothingwrong subreddit and realized something. Most of the MCU villains did nothing wrong. What if the MCU movies are from the wrong perspective? What if the “heroes” are actually the villains? Think about it…

Iron Monger (Ironman)- Technology should be shared
Loki(Avengers)- Humanity needs better leadership
Ultron(Age of Ultron)- Sees the internet and humanity is evil
Zemo(Civil War)- Those who commit crimes should pay
Vulture(Spider-Man)- Those in power need to share it
Kilmonger(Black Panther)- Those who commit crimes should pay
Thanos(Infinity War)- Life is killing the universe

I’m not saying the end justifies the means. I’m also not saying every villain is correct in what he or she did. The Red Skull was a nazi so that’s not okay. And neither is Ronin or Ego destroying entire planets. But maybe if the heroes had slowed down and talked about it, these fights would not have happened.

New 007?

007

James Bond is finally ready to take a new direction. Rumors are flying around that none other then Idris Elba will be taking the roll of 007. I for one am glad that this may be the new direction. I’ve never been a huge fan of Daniel Craig. He was okay at best. And the movies haven’t been that great recently. I’m hoping with a new lead the series will have better stories, action, and special effects. If not Mr. Elba then maybe Tom Hiddleston, or Henry Cavill, or maybe a young Bond in Tom Holland should take up the mantle of the legendary spy.

Rooster Teeth turns 15

This weekend marks one of the last conventions of the season (Pax, SDCC, etc) with RTX happening in Austin. If you don’t watch a lot of YouTube or you aren’t a huge geek like me you probably have no idea what RTX is. Good thing I can explain it.

RTX is a geek convention that showcases a lot of Rooster Teeth (and it’s affiliate) products and shows. It is one of the biggest geek conventions in the US. And it was started by Rooster Teeth.

Fifteen years ago Rooster Teeth began with a few guys, a few Xbox’s, and a dream to make content. Over the past fifteen years they have been living that dream. They started in a spare bedroom and now have over 70 full time employees.

Their original content was based around Halo and was famously called Red vs Blue (it’s on Netflix). They made little videos of Halo Spartans living “normal” life. It turned out to be a smash hit. RvB is still coming out with new episodes today.

But Rooster Teeth isn’t just Halo anymore. Today they make everything from anime (RWBY) to game shows (On the Spot) to video game commentary (Achievement Hunter) to so many other things. Each unique and impressive.

I have to respect and congratulate Rooster Teeth. They have done what so many people want to do. They turned their hobby into their careers. As one who strives to make content (be it YouTube or WetheGeek) I understand the struggle to create something. But these guys (and now girls) have done it. They make content that so many different people can enjoy.

So thank you Rooster Teeth for all the content you make. And congrats on 15 years!

I know it’s an older photo. Ray is still in it

Teen Titans too dark?

Before I start I want to preface with this

All you DC comics fanboys that are easily triggered should ignore this post. Or you can not get your super tights in a twist and read this. Thanks.

When the live action trailer for a Teen Titans show dropped at SDCC a lot of concerns were raised. There are a ton of issues like costumes, casting choices, content, and not to mention Robin.

It’s that last one I want to talk about. The angry teenager that is Robin. I need to start by saying stop your complaining. I’m sorry this isn’t Robin from Batman the Animated Series. It doesn’t have to be. They can do a new spin on Dick Grayson and it not be a bad thing.

The issues most people have with him is that during the trailer he is quite violent and seems to hate Batman. Both of these things are okay. Training under Batman would be a nightmare. He hasn’t been particularly nice to any of the Robins. He usually abuses them emotionally and physically so they become just like him. Batman is less of a father and more of a drill sargent. Not to say Batman can’t be nice, but over all he is a real jerk to every Robin. If he did something terrible to Dick (and it happens all the time in the comics) I’m not surprised Robin has turned dark. He is rebelling as most teens do. By doing the exact opposite of what their parents tell them. For Batman it was not to kill. So that’s exactly what Robin does. Just to make Batman mad and get his attention. In all honesty it looks like this is just a teenage cry for help from an abused child who has ptsd from losing his parents. Quite sad once you think about it.

It’s that or this is all a dream sequence (I’m looking at you Batman vs Superman).

If I’m wrong I’ll apologize. The whole show could be garbage and Robin along with it. Till then I’ll try to be hopeful.

Teen Titans Returns?

With the release of Teen Titans Go: The Movie a lot of mixed reviews have come out. I understand. On the one hand it has an amazing cast (Nick Cage, Tara Strong, Will Arnet, Kristen Bell and other’s). But it takes more then a good cast to make a movie (I’m looking at you Justice League). The movie isn’t half bad. It’s kinda what you would expect out of an ish cartoon series. Which makes it like a 5/10.

But the actual exciting part is the end credit scene. From what it looks like, Cartoon Network is bringing back Teen Titans. The show a lot of us grew up with. Not the new one. And to be honest I’m not surprised. The DCEU isn’t doing super well. The live action Titans show has made fans hesitant. But one thing DC has done well is cartoons. Look at Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Batman the Animated Series, Superman. And now Young Justice is coming back. To bring back Teen Titans seems like a great move. But it raises two questions for me. One) Is it really coming back? And two) When is Batman Beyond coming back? I guess we will just have to wait and see

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

The last in our Indiana Jones #tbt series is finally here. Our last crusade so to speak, or more accurately Indy’s. The conclusion to an amazing trilogy that definitely does not have a forth movie about aliens in South America and crazy Commies.

It’s 1938 and Indy is already in trouble. His dad has gone missing while searching for the Holy Grail. Indy must travel all over Europe in search of his dad who has been kidnapped by… drum roll please… Nazis! Indy rescues his dad and the two return to searching for the grail. Things don’t go as planned and the Nazis make a mess of things, go figure. If you want to know what happens you should go watch it.

The Last Crusade was released May 24, 1989. It tied up the lose ends of the other two movies and gave Indy a nice retirement. Made yet again by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg the movie wasn’t half bad. It wasn’t nearly as dark as Temple of Doom and gave a nice background on Indy and his Dad who was played by Sean Connery.

I didn’t hate the movie. All things considered I didn’t think it was half bad. I have seen worse and I honestly feel it was better then Temple of Doom. It added a new adventure but didn’t betray the other movies. Overall I would give it a 7/10 🙂

Tune in next week when we start “scary” and “Halloween” geek movies to celebrate Spooktober!

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

It’s that time of the week again! We are here to put on our rose tinted glasses and look at classic 70s,80s, and 90s movies. It’s week two of the Indiana Jones trilogy and it’s another great movie.

We pick up with Indy a year before the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark. It’s 1935 and Indy is in deep trouble again. He is on the run from the Chinese mob and ends up getting partnered with a little kid named Short Round (how original). During their dating escape they end up in a small village in India. The village is in bad shape because of a cult. Indy sets off to stop the cult leader and save the village. A lot of crazy things happen like a mine cart chase and human sacrifices.

Created again by George Lucas and Steven Spielberg this sequel was supposed to be a lot darker then it ended up (I think human sacrifices is pretty bad). Lucas said “it had to have been a dark film. The way Empire Strikes Back was the dark second act of the Star Wars trilogy.” Lucas and Spielberg disagreed on much of the film, everything from the main villains to locations. After a lot of work we have the film that we all love today. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was released May 23, 1984 to the pubic who loved it.

Temple of Doom is not my favorite of the three. I tend to find it a bit too strange. That’s not to say there aren’t great scenes like the mine carts or the temple itself. But all in I think it could have been better. There were ideas about an adventure around the Great Wall of China or bringing back a few of the Nazis but in the end they didn’t happen. I would have much rather seen the China story line over the Temple. But in the end it’s not a bad movie.

I give it a 6/10 😐

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark

Not all heroes wear capes. Some are college professors that wear a fedora and carry a whip. You probably already know who I’m talking about, Indiana Jones! Indy is the star of the next few weeks of our #throwbackthursday series. ⠀

By the same studio that brought you Star Wars (Lucas Films) and the mind of Steven Spielberg comes an action movie that stands out. It has romance, adventure, treasure, and nazi fighting! Harrison Ford plays the smart and dashing rogue archeologist Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones who is out to seek the truth and do so in style. A trilogy (just. A. Trilogy.) the whole family can enjoy!⠀

If the cheesy trailer doesn’t sell you, well I’m not done. The first Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark was the first in a series that followed Indy on his adventures to save priceless treasures and protect the past from the nazis and evil soviets. ⠀

Raiders came out in 1981. The story is based in 1936 and follows Indy as he tries to find the Ark of the Covenant as talked about in the Bible. On his way to find the Ark Indy must fight off Nazis and try to stay one step ahead of them the entire time. ⠀

Raiders started a franchise that has long been a staple of action adventure movies. Most people have seen and love the trilogy. Small side note, I know there is a forth Indy but I absolutely hate it and it wasn’t made in the 80s so it doesn’t count. Deal with it. I digress, Harrison Ford does an amazing job playing a rogue character that you really come to like. He is brash, charismatic, and what most young boys want to be. I love this series if you couldn’t tell. Well most of it. Overall I give Raiders a solid 7/10⠀

Back to the Future Part III

Back to the Future Part III is the final part of the BttF trilogy. Even though it is the third by no means is it the weakest. Most people would assume by three movies, going back in time would be a tired old trope because the films would follow the same formula. They would be wrong. Sureee Marty (Michael J. Fox) gets stuck in some different time and has to have help getting back to 1985. But with each one there is a fun variation on how it happens and how time travel even works. It’s not always as simple as it seems.

In part III Marty gets stuck in 1885 with an also stranded Doc. Both have to fight off the town bullies and attempt to get back to 1985. Inadvertently Doc falls in love with a beautiful woman whom he just can’t leave. By the end Doc decides two things. To send Marty back alone and to destroy the time machine. These decisions have a lot of repercussions and you will have to watch to find out how the trilogy ends.

Overall it isn’t my favorite of the three but I also don’t hate it. It’s a solid conclusion that ties up the story nicely. In the end I give the Back to the Future trilogy 7.5/10. So go rewatch it and have some fun along the way!
