The Deaths of Batman and Superman?

It looks like the DCEU is officially over. Reports are coming out that Henry Cavill is done playing Superman. The DCEU consists of five movies currently out and only one of those is worth watching. Having a 20% success rate compared to the MCUs blockbusters production factory must be hitting the Warner Brothers execs pretty hard. WB is reportedly “shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story featuring a teen superheroine.” According to the Hollywood Reporter. The big blue boy scout defiantly doesn’t fit the “teen” demographic.

I have to admit, most of us around the office aren’t surprised. Cavill has proven himself a successful actor in other movies and is now staring in the Witcher Netflix series. The DCEU hasn’t been that good and honestly needs better casting. The dark grit of the Snyderverse has never resonated well with me. Marvel has been producing action movies that have gravitas and comedy (Infinity War, Black Panther, even Homecoming). The DCEU has always felt like someone who skimmed a couple wikis on DC comics and tried to make movies from it. Only Wonder Woman has been any good. I’m not disappointed to see the DCEU finally be put to rest.

But not all hope is lost Aquaman comes out in December, Shazam next May, Wonder Woman 1984 comes out late 2019, and the Flash is supposed to start filming in the spring. Even without a shared universe I feel that DC can create strong movies. And maybe with the help of Flashpoint we can see the Justice League reunite again.

Superman Returns to gaming?

The rumor mill is in full swing again and this time it’s coming straight from pcgamer.com. Reports are coming out that Rocksteady is posting job listings for a new AAA game. If the name Rocksteady seems familiar then you’ve probably played the good Batman Arkham games (*cough* not origins *cough*). If you remember titles like Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight you’re thinking of the right studio.

Taking the rumor that Rocksteady is making a “highly anticipated upcoming AAA title” I have to wonder what it is. If I’m not mistaken I remember a few months ago another rumor floating around. Rumor that a Superman game was coming out, in the same style as the Arkham games. What I’m suggesting is that Rocksteady is making a Arkham style Superman game and it’s finally in production!

I have extremely fond memories of the Arkham series. I first played Arkham City and completed it to 100%. Even with those dumb Riddler trophies. I’ve since played all the other games and love them. The combat style was unique, the plot engrossing, and the animation superb. That’s not even mentioning the voice talent of Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy.

I’m hoping Rocksteady is working on Superman. And maybe this will be better than Superman 64.

Miles Morales Movie (finally)!

With the holiday movie rush starting this month (scary movie September) we get a chance to peek ahead and mark our calendars. In the next few months alone I know there are eight blockbusters coming out I want to see. Wreck it Ralph is finally getting his much deserved sequel and Aquaman is getting a solo movie. Our entire staff has movies they are excited for that are coming out in the rest of 2018. Most of our staff (probably Luna the most) is excited for Crimes of Grindelwald. I know MKAmethyst and I are ready for Wreck it Ralph. KaytheHuman has not stopped talking about Disney’s Nutcracker. TheDoctor and I are reserved about Venom. We are afraid it will just be a turd in the wind. Mabel is really excited for Kingsmen 3, whoops I mean Robin Hood. But the movie I’m most excited about? Spider-Man into the Spiderverse. I can’t express enough how good it looks. And with the release of the New Spider-Man game on PS4 the hype should be very real.

For those of you who haven’t seen the trailers Into the Spiderverse is going to revolve around you Miles Morales (not the normal Peter Parker) and his adventures as Spider-Man. The cast includes Nick Cage, Hailiee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, and Lily Tomlin.

I’m excited and ready for a refreshing new take on Spider-Man. Here is to seeing Miles on the big screen this December!

A MEGa disappointment

I don’t even know where to begin about this movie (seriously, I’ve rewritten this intro 5 different ways). On one hand, I’m in shock that I even decided to buy a ticket to this movie and on the other, I’m not exactly upset that I did so.
Plot:
A multimillion research facility hypothesized that an oceanic trench is deeper than predicted and send crew to find out. Hypothesis confirmed but sub is attacked by… Something… And is stuck. Research facility gets previously retired (and apparently crazy) rescue dude to rescue sub which he does so but accidentally allows the something into our part of the ocean: The Meg!!!
I actually thought that the first part of the movie was extremely interesting. Sure, there were a lot of science terms I didn’t understand but they way that they explained why such an ancient creature might survive all these years without coming into contact with humans was very intriguing and I wish that they did more like that throughout the movie.
My number one issue with this movie is that it moves at such an incredible pace that I don’t remember anyone’s name, not even the main character. I guess when you’re so focused on the MONSTER SHARK in the movie that it might knock out a few names but I seriously don’t remember any. It’s also a very straightforward plot: X happens so Y must happen and Z results (repeat x3) so it’s a great movie if you want to turn off everything in your mind and allow the monster jumpscares to wash over you but not one to get too technical about past the first 20 minute mark.
WARNING: There is Blood, jumpscares, death, and choice words!

Disenchantment is Enchanting

Okay y’all. Disenchantment. Everyone stop what you’re doing right this second and go watch this show. I’m clearly not hiding my opinion until the end I’m saying this show is amazing.
Brief summary: the show follows Bean a princess who is horrible at being a princess. She drinks. She does drugs. Her best friend is a demon sent to ruin her life and an elf that they accidentally adopt. But the show is a surprisingly poignant story about what it’s like to be a female in your 20s and where the entire world has a say in what you do and you’re the only voice not being heard. So yes perfect for our female friends but also great for people who are interested in swashbuckling adventure.
Also the show is written by the same people who did futurama. A lot of the voice actors are the same like Billy West. As my boyfriend and I watched it we played the game of which voice actor is this person (a fun little game). It follows the same sort of concept where you’re being entertained and joked at until you really realize the show is making you look at deep social questions about mortality, morality and social constructs. You can just watch it for fun or you can get a great current events debate going.
All in all an amazingly well done show that tailors to everyone’s interests. Go watch

And P.S: you’re required to read every sign that is in the show. Legally required. By law.

New 007?

007

James Bond is finally ready to take a new direction. Rumors are flying around that none other then Idris Elba will be taking the roll of 007. I for one am glad that this may be the new direction. I’ve never been a huge fan of Daniel Craig. He was okay at best. And the movies haven’t been that great recently. I’m hoping with a new lead the series will have better stories, action, and special effects. If not Mr. Elba then maybe Tom Hiddleston, or Henry Cavill, or maybe a young Bond in Tom Holland should take up the mantle of the legendary spy.

Disney and the Nutcracker

Because this is also a post where I am introducing myself a little, get ready to jump on the hype train (I always do).

I am so excited for this movie. I love ballet, and I loved the Barbie movies Swan Lake and Nutcracker growing up. The two trailers that are out make The Nutcracker and the Four Realms to look straight up magical. The use of the original score, the beautiful winter wonderland, and an all star cast are making me crave hot chocolate and gingerbread in August. So now, I only have to wait 3 months to see it in theaters. I’ll be over here listening to the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and dreaming of snow.

Teen Titans too dark?

Before I start I want to preface with this

All you DC comics fanboys that are easily triggered should ignore this post. Or you can not get your super tights in a twist and read this. Thanks.

When the live action trailer for a Teen Titans show dropped at SDCC a lot of concerns were raised. There are a ton of issues like costumes, casting choices, content, and not to mention Robin.

It’s that last one I want to talk about. The angry teenager that is Robin. I need to start by saying stop your complaining. I’m sorry this isn’t Robin from Batman the Animated Series. It doesn’t have to be. They can do a new spin on Dick Grayson and it not be a bad thing.

The issues most people have with him is that during the trailer he is quite violent and seems to hate Batman. Both of these things are okay. Training under Batman would be a nightmare. He hasn’t been particularly nice to any of the Robins. He usually abuses them emotionally and physically so they become just like him. Batman is less of a father and more of a drill sargent. Not to say Batman can’t be nice, but over all he is a real jerk to every Robin. If he did something terrible to Dick (and it happens all the time in the comics) I’m not surprised Robin has turned dark. He is rebelling as most teens do. By doing the exact opposite of what their parents tell them. For Batman it was not to kill. So that’s exactly what Robin does. Just to make Batman mad and get his attention. In all honesty it looks like this is just a teenage cry for help from an abused child who has ptsd from losing his parents. Quite sad once you think about it.

It’s that or this is all a dream sequence (I’m looking at you Batman vs Superman).

If I’m wrong I’ll apologize. The whole show could be garbage and Robin along with it. Till then I’ll try to be hopeful.

Teen Titans Returns?

With the release of Teen Titans Go: The Movie a lot of mixed reviews have come out. I understand. On the one hand it has an amazing cast (Nick Cage, Tara Strong, Will Arnet, Kristen Bell and other’s). But it takes more then a good cast to make a movie (I’m looking at you Justice League). The movie isn’t half bad. It’s kinda what you would expect out of an ish cartoon series. Which makes it like a 5/10.

But the actual exciting part is the end credit scene. From what it looks like, Cartoon Network is bringing back Teen Titans. The show a lot of us grew up with. Not the new one. And to be honest I’m not surprised. The DCEU isn’t doing super well. The live action Titans show has made fans hesitant. But one thing DC has done well is cartoons. Look at Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Batman the Animated Series, Superman. And now Young Justice is coming back. To bring back Teen Titans seems like a great move. But it raises two questions for me. One) Is it really coming back? And two) When is Batman Beyond coming back? I guess we will just have to wait and see
