Thrones, Knights, and a messed up family

The Game of Knights

Another Sunday has passed and thus another episode of Game of Thrones. Yesterday’s episode was titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” and was mostly centered around the preparation of Winterfell for the incoming attack of the Wight Walker hoard lead by the Night King. The episode starts just as the last one left off: with Jaime “F***ing” Lannister. Jaime has to face Daenerys who is still quite angry about Jaime killing her father, so she has no intention of letting him off easily. Jaime attempts to show his change of heart by admitting that Cersei had no intention of sending the Lannister army north and that he was a fool for trusting her. Then Brienne of Tarth stands and vouches for Jaime stating that he is a decent man that has made mistakes in the past. Sansa trusts Brienne whole-heartedly thus granting Jaime his life and allowing him to fight along-side Brienne.

Tyrion had orginally believed that Cersei would be sending her men to the aid of Dany and Jon, but after hearing Jaime’s dissappointing news, Tyrion admits he is a fool to which Dany threatens to remove his position as Hand of the Queen. Meanwhile, Arya is checking in on Gendry and getting her flirt on with our favorite Baratheon bastard. Then things shift to a rather uncomfortable conversation between Bran and Jaime in the God’s Wood. My prediction of indifference on Bran’s part toward Jaime’s attempt on his life came true leaving what happened back in the first episode of the series between them. Jaime then returns to the castle to have a heart-to-heart with his brother, Tyrion, in which they discuss the foolishness in trusting Cersei. The two also face the fact that everyone is going to die including them. We then keep following Jaime around Winterfell to his next stop: Brienne. Jaime learns that Brienne is commanding the left flank and wishes to serve underneath her. He goes about all of this without a single insult thrown at Brienne which throws her off guard considering their past relationship.

We drift over to Dany’s room where Ser Jorah of the Friend Zone vouches for Tyrion as Dany’s hand which actually works. Then Dany heads down to have a one-on-one chat with Sansa in an attempt to play nicely with her nephew-boyfriend’s cold sister-cousin. They discuss their similarities of being strong women in position of power and their loves for Jon. Dany admits she is in love with Jon which leads Sansa to her main concern: the North. Sansa demands that the North be left to rule themselves outside of the Seven Kingdoms. Unfortunately, their meeting is cut short by Theon Greyjoy, which is a relief to Sansa to see her old friend alive and well.

Then Ser Davos, for some reason, is serving soup and helping Gilly convince a little girl to stay in the crypt where it’s safe. A nice filler scene that warmed my heart just as that soup warmed the belly of that brave, naive little girl. Tormund arrives back at Winterfell with the news that the Night King will attack before morning, to which a plan is formed. In the war room, all our favorite characters gather to go over their plan of defense and guerrilla warfare. Bran proposes that he is used as bait to lure the Night King into the God’s Wood where Jon can strike with the dragons, hopefully, killing the Night King and leaving the army of Wight’s without a master. Then we see how Grey Worm is prepping the Unsullied for battle and instilling hope in his love,

Missandei. Jon, Sam and Edd share a brotherly chat about the good and bad times at Castle Black.

Considering everyone is preparing for battle in their own way, Jaime, Tyrion, Podrick, Brienne, Davos and Tormund share some drinks in front of a fireplace. Tormund then whips out a story about being raised by a giant while chugging some sort of milk in an effort to finally whoo Brienne…which doesn’t work, of course. Arya and The Hound share some wine and are interrupted by Beric trying to preach at them. Then Arya is met by Gendry in the archery range with her new Dragon Glass staff. Gendry reveals that he is King Robert’s bastard and Arya questions him about his sexual history, which lead in the only direction it could. After the seasons long sexual tension between these adorable kiddos, Arya loses her virginity to a decent guy. I’ll admit, I was convinced Arya was going to be another LGBT character, but honestly, she can be with whoever she wants.

We then head back to the fireplace with the unlikely group of heroes discussing their victories and failures. Tormund hears that Brienne isn’t a knight and calls bull-manure on tradition. Jaime takes it upon himself to knight Brienne which finally gives Brienne what she has always wanted. We then witness Ser Jorah of the Friend Zone trying to tell Little Lady Lyanna Mormont that she shouldn’t defend their family name, but the Tiny Bear will fight until the bitter end. Sam seeing this, presents Heartsbane, the Tarly House sword, to Jorah as a gift to a loyal friend. Back at the fireplace, Podrick starts to sing one last song before the inevitable demise of almost every major character we have come to know and love. The next scene is what we’ve all been waiting for since last Sunday. Down in the crypt at the statue of Lyanna Stark, Jon tells the story of the secret marriage of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark and the legitimate child between them being raised as Eddard Stark’s bastard son, Jon. Dany is taken aback by this because that means that her claim to the Iron Throne has now been trumped by Jon a.k.a Aegon Targaryen, the last male heir. But the incest doesn’t matter. Right? The episode ends with the Night King standing at far side of the icy tundra staring at Winterfell as if it were just another obstacle in his path to destroying all of mankind. Winter is here, my friends.

With this whole episode being centered around preparing for impending doom, they sure do a good job of instilling hope in the viewers that somehow our favorite characters will survive and beat the odds, but realistically, everyone on the front lines is going to die. That includes Brienne, Jaime, Podrick, Grey Worm, Jorah, The Hound, Davos, Gendry, Sam, and Theon. Not to mention that Bran has a high chance of dying simply because as bait for the Night King, he accepts his fate as long as it won’t be in vain. I also have a sneaking suspicion that another dragon will die, if not both, because they will be in the direct line of fire for the Night King and his undead Viserion that no one knows exists. Jon, Dany, Sansa, Arya, and Tryion will most likely will survive episode 3 because of the underlying tensions between them and all 5 of them have the greatest chances of taking the Iron Throne away from Cersei. But remember how Jon now has the best claim to the throne? Maybe Dany will make an attempt on Jon’s life since she wants the Throne so badly. She is a pure Targaryen after all and they don’t tend to have the

best mental health record on account of the inbreeding. But all of this is just speculation my part so we’ll just have to tune in next week for the Final Battle to see how this plays out.
